Tools and Hardware Reviews of Makita LS1013F 10-inch Dual Slide Compound Miter saw with LightCustomer Review: Three years later, here's my review... Summary: 5 Stars
Bought this from Amazon in April 2006. It replaced my tank-like 10" Milwaukee miter saw - the most accurate power tool I ever used until this Makita arrived. Every time I use this tool, I fall in love with it all over again. So I figured I 'owed' it a good review. I am not a professional tradesman, craftsman, carpenter, etc. - just an overly enthusiatic homeowner who gets in way over my head sometimes. I take piles of perfectly good wood and convert 'em to sawdust and cutoffs - but now I do it with a big smile and with more precision than I deserve. If I had to pick one word for this saw - just one - it would be smooth.
No. Make that S-M-O-O-O-O-T-H instead.
Being able to bevel and miter from either side gives me confidence to tackle difficult cuts. I find myself enjoying that 'little extra' bit of trim & finish work on every job - it gives me an excuse to practice with this saw. I do stuff I wouldn't even bother trying if I did not have this tool. In addition to the cutting performance and accuracy, it's proven itself very versatile in my small garage shop since I can swing the saw around instead of the wood (usually cedar dimension lumber). Nice capcity - cuts 4x4 or a stck of 2x4 on edge with ease. My most challenging compound cuts so far? Building custom attic gable vents and fitting the louver slats (45 degree slant) into an octagonal enclosure. The angle math was a bit of a challenge (!) but once calculated, the cuts were easy to set up and execute on this saw - and dead on. Yeah, I know what you're thinking: "Gable vents? GABLE VENTS! Big deal..." Me, too - until I got to those multiple angle end cuts.
The saw is well engineered and built with quality. No problems in 3-1/2 years of (admittedly) occasional use. The blade is excellent, with cuts comparable to those from my Forrest table saw blade. Even with the great deal from Amazon - free shipping, too - it was the 2nd most expensive tool I've ever purchased (after my table saw). But I never regretted it. Not once.
Wishes: 2nd hold down clamp would be nice (mine came with one clamp and two extensions). I find myself moving the clamp to the 'other' side frequently. Like most Makita tools, accessories and parts are easy to find so I'll probably snag one soon. Cheers!
