Tools and Hardware Reviews of Makita BDF452HW 18-Volt Compact Lithium-Ion Cordless 1/2-Inch Driver-Drill Kit

Customer Review: Cool Tool
Summary: 5 Stars

Just wanted to say that I bought this for my brother. No complaints yet. He told me that it was exactly what he wanted. Noticed that the box is kinda cheapy but the drill looks great. He likes the fact that batteries charge in only 15 minutes.

Customer Review: Fast 15 minute recharge, great torque after 1 year of ownership, replaces my DeWalt
Summary: 4 Stars

I liked this drill so much I bought a second one as a gift for a good friend of mine. I've had mine for a little over 1 year with no real complaints.

This new lithium ion technology is amazing, fast 15 minute recharges and so far no battery-memory issues. (I am very careful to run it down before recharging - I've heard that recharging when the battery is not empty can cause a battery-memory issue where the battery never fully charges)

This replaces my old DeWalt whose ni-cad battery lasted 5 minutes (after a couple years of ownership) and would take forever to recharge. This lithium-ion makes me so much more productive because of the super-fast recharges.

I have two minor complaints, but this one nullifies itself. The recharger station itself is gia-normous and loud (it has a loud whirring cooling fan). It takes up a good bit of shelf space and is probably 4 times the size of a Craftsman charger and 2 times the size of a DeWalt charger. But one of the nice things about the recharger is that the manual states it helps prevent 'battery-memory' issues by intelligently recharging only what is needed. How that happens, I have no idea, but after 1 year, it works as good as new with great battery life. If the size of the charger with all that fancy-technology will prevent me from having to buy a new battery, then so be it.

The other complaint is also minor - there's NOT a built-in, bit holder like every Craftsman or DeWalt has. It has an *optional* bit holder that you have to buy. I bought one on Ebay for $5 plus a couple dollars shipping, but for real?? They couldn't have molded a very simple bit holder for the all too common Phillips or flat head bit ? The funny thing is that it includes the bit, but you can't store it ON the drill and you'll likely lose it first.

Other than those two annoyances, some cool things are the LED light when you are using the drill and the bubble-level. This is a nice light-weight drill with great torque I almost sprained my wrist when a screw became jammed - the torque was that strong.

Customer Review: Worthless piece of junk
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this for my son, he only used it once or twice the first year. The charger and batteries failed after about two charges, not to mention it also had the off-center chuck. So everything is out of warranty, and replacing the defective parts is more cost than new ones.

Customer Review: Super Powerful in a Compact Body
Summary: 5 Stars

I can affirm everything positive written about this drill in other reviews. It is more powerful than any other cordless I've ever used. It doesn't come with anything other than a standard phillips/flat head bit, so make sure that you have a drill bit set before you receive this item. Also, keep in mind that the batteries that come with this drill are NOT like any batteries that you use for other re-chargeable devices. They are much, much more powerful and sensitive to how they are charged and used. You have to make sure that you drain the battery before charging it, and that once the charger says the battery is fully re-charged to take it off the charger immediately. You CANNOT leave the battery on the charger device indefinitely or else it WILL burn out the battery.

Customer Review: Makita 18 Volt Lithium-ion Drill
Summary: 4 Stars

Works well & strong. This one replaces a worn out Ryobi 24 Volt Ni-Cad drill and 2 Black & Decker Fire Storm 24 Volt drills. So far I am impressed.
